GIFTED AND TALENTED DEFINITION

Gifted and Talented students are those who perform at or show the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who exhibit high performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area, possess an usual capacity for leadership, and/or excel in a specific academic field.  Gifted and Talented students are also defined as those who excel in their ability to think, reason, judge, invent, or create to the degree that they need special facilities and/or educational services in order that they may have the opportunity to achieve their potential while making increased meaningful contributions to society. 

TEXAS STATE GOAL FOR SERVICES FOR GIFTED/TALENTED STUDENTS

Students who participate in services designed for gifted/talented students will demonstrate skills in self-directed learning, thinking, research, and communication as evidenced by the development of innovative products and performances that reflect individuality and creativity and are advanced in relation to students of similar age, experience, or environment.



DISTRICT GIFTED & TALENTED IDENTIFICATION TIMELINE 

Referral procedures published on district website

 

Late October – Early November

Referral window for Kindergarten-11th grade students opens; Referrals accepted from anyone for GT program consideration; including self-referral.  Referrals due to campus prior to the week of Thanksgiving break.

November

Parent Inventory Surveys sent upon receipt of parent GT referrals

December

Screenings, assessments, and re-assessments conducted after written parental permission is obtained

 

December – January

Gifted/Talented Committee meets on K-11th grade screenings

February

Written parental permission for services obtained for identified GT students

February

Services begin for identified students
